The Boston Red Sox removed Roman Anthony from their wild-card roster because of a right hand injury, manager Chad Tracy said Wednesday, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.
Anthony is out indefinitely after an MRI revealed multiple strains, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. Since the Red Sox removed him from the roster mid-series, he's now ineligible to return until the ALCS, should they advance.
"He was sent back last night after leaving the game," Tracy said. "We sent him back to Boston for extra, additional imaging, which actually revealed some new strains to different muscles in his wrist, in addition to exacerbating the old injuries. It's not great."
Anthony, who missed 101 games during the regular season because of a right wrist sprain and hand issue, suffered this latest injury when he fouled off a pitch during his first at-bat Tuesday, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. He felt it again on a check-swing later in that plate appearance and took one more at-bat before being removed in the sixth inning.
The 22-year-old told reporters the new injury feels similar to his prior ring finger ligament issue, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
"I feel sick to my stomach. ... It doesn't really feel real," Anthony said after returning to New York following his tests, per the Globe's Tim Healey.
Anthony added that he and the team are still unsure of the next steps after the latest diagnosis, per the Herald's Gabrielle Starr.
Curtis Mead is replacing him in the lineup. Mead hasn't played since fracturing his wrist in his first game with the Red Sox in late July, following a trade with the Washington Nationals.
The Red Sox will look to stave off elimination in the best-of-three series when Game 2 goes Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.
