The Montreal Canadiens parted with their longest-serving player on Monday, sending forward Brendan Gallagher to the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations.

The Canadiens retain 50% of Gallagher's $6.5-million cap hit as part of the trade. He's entering the final season of a six-year contract.

Gallagher notched seven goals and 16 assists in 77 games this season. He was a healthy scratch for all but three of Montreal's 19 playoff games.

The 34-year-old said at the end of Montreal's season that it was "pretty clear" he'd be moving on.

The Canadiens drafted Gallagher in the fifth round in 2010. He broke into the league in 2012-13 and ranks 13th in Canadiens history with 911 games played.

He scored 30 goals twice and reached the 20-goal mark on three other occasions during his time with the Habs.

Gallagher hails from Edmonton and played his junior hockey with the Vancouver Giants. He'll likely serve as a veteran mentor for the rebuilding Canucks.
