Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse asked to be traded, sources told Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Mark Spector.

Spector reported last week that the Oilers would prefer to move the veteran rearguard this offseason. Nurse apparently agreed that finding a new team would be beneficial for both sides, and he's reportedly submitted a list of three-to-five teams he would consider.

Nurse's contract includes a full no-trade clause until July 2027. He's owed $9.25 million per season through 2030.

The Oilers drafted Nurse seventh overall in 2013, and he's since registered 324 points in 798 games with the club. His 24 points this past season marked his lowest total in a full season, and his minus-12 rating was the second worst of his career.

Edmonton is facing a critical offseason after a first-round playoff exit. The failure cost head coach Kris Knoblauch his job, and the Oilers are reportedly working to hire Mike Babcock as his replacement pending an NHLPA investigation into his past behavior.

Oilers superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were highly critical of the club's regression after back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Final. McDavid said Edmonton was an "average team all year," while Draisaitl asserted that the whole organization took a step back.

Without factoring in a potential Nurse trade, the Oilers have approximately $14.5 million in cap space this summer, according to PuckPedia.
