Ex-Michigan head coach Dusty May released a statement Tuesday on social media after suddenly leaving the school to become the lead man for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.
"This wasn't an easy decision," May wrote. "An opportunity came long that was right for my family and something I felt I needed to pursue, but that doesn't change how much these last two years have meant to us."
May added: "Ann Arbor became home, and we'll always be grateful for the relationships and memories that came from our time here."
Michigan hired May in March 2024 following a strong six-season stint with Florida Atlantic, which included a Conference USA Tournament crown and a Final Four run.
The 49-year-old then engineered a massive turnaround in Ann Arbor, guiding the Wolverines to a 64-13 mark over two seasons and their first national championship since 1989.
May's efforts last season earned him Big Ten Coach of the Year honors.
Dallas mutually agreed to part ways with Jason Kidd following the 2025-26 campaign, and tabbed May as his successor.
Michigan assistant Mike Boynton Jr. was named interim coach following May's departure.
"When my family and I came to Ann Arbor two years ago, we hoped we could help bring Michigan basketball back to where it belongs," May wrote. "I never could have imagined how special these last two seasons would be."
