The Charlotte Hornets are retiring the No. 1 jersey of Muggsy Bogues at halftime of the club's Feb. 11 matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks, the team announced Tuesday.
The Maryland native will join Bobby Phills and Dell Curry as the only players in franchise history to receive the honor.
"We had some success, not the success that we wanted to have and win the championship, but we had a lot of success in the city of Charlotte and being recognized as one that they want to hang my jersey in the rafters, it means the world to me and my family," Bogues told NBA.com's Jeff Zillgitt.
At 5-foot-3, Bogues was the shortest player in NBA history.
The floor general spent parts of 10 seasons with the Hornets, averaging 8.8 points, 8.8 assists, 2.9 boards, and 1.7 steals across 632 appearances, including 501 starts.
He finished in the NBA's top five for assists on five occasions and tallied the sixth-most steals in 1991-92. He remains the club's all-time leader in assists and steals.
Bogues was part of three playoff runs in Charlotte, including a trip to the second round in 1993.
"Me and the Hornets put each other on the map," Bogues said. "When I first came, it was like it was a match made in heaven, being one of the original players.
"I played nine-plus years here and it's special to have some success and be embraced by the fans from Day 1, having that type of support and having unbelievable teammates to play with, to fight, to go to war with."
