Spain will meet Argentina in Sunday's World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium with an extra piece of history on the line.

The victors will be presented with championship rings for the first time, alongside the famous trophy and gold medals.

FIFA announced that the champions will receive "bespoke championship rings" to bring "one of the most recognizable American sporting traditions to the global game."

One side of each ring will showcase the World Cup trophy, while the other will be customized to reflect the identity of the winning team, FIFA said.

The rings will be part of a limited edition of 2,026 individually numbered pieces, with 30 allocated to the winning side. The remaining 1,996 will be available for purchase as an officially licensed product.

After the final whistle, the head coach and captain of the victorious team will be handed temporary rings to mark the occasion, with the 30 official rings delivered at a later date once they've been customized.

Argentina is seeking a second consecutive World Cup title after lifting the trophy four years ago in Qatar, while Spain is looking to claim its second World Cup crown after winning the tournament in 2010.
