Neymar said his Brazil career is "over" following the Selecao's World Cup exit at the hands of Norway.
Brazil's run at this summer's tournament ended with a 2-1 defeat Sunday in the round of 16.
The 34-year-old attacker, who came off the bench and scored a late penalty for his 80th international goal, suggested afterwards that he won't pull on the famous canary yellow shirt again.
"I tried, I tried. Now it's over," he told Brazilian outlet Globo, as translated by ESPN. "I started here, I finished here."
Neymar made his debut for Brazil in a friendly match against the United States at MetLife Stadium in 2010. He scored that day - his first senior international goal - just as he did at the same venue Sunday.
Neymar is Brazil's all-time leading scorer, three goals ahead of Pele.
His consolation marker Sunday made him only the second Brazilian man, after Pele, to score in four different World Cups.
It was a surprise that he made manager Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad to begin with after being beset by various injuries in recent years.
Ancelotti said after Sunday's loss that Brazil, which hasn't won the World Cup since 2002, must start a "new cycle" going into the 2030 tournament.
