Los Angeles Sparks star forward Nneka Ogwumike announced she'll retire at the end of the season, confirming the news during an episode of Boardroom Talks released Wednesday.
"I've learned there's power in knowing when to walk away," Ogwumike said in a statement. "For so long, that strength meant finding a way to keep pushing. Now, it means recognizing when you feel complete. I find myself grateful, fulfilled, and at peace with everything this game has given me and everything I've poured into it."
Ogwumike has enjoyed a celebrated 15-year WNBA career, earning 11 All-Star nods and the Most Valuable Player award in 2016.
The Sparks selected Ogwumike with the No. 1 overall pick in 2012 following a standout collegiate career at Stanford.
Ogwumike developed into one of the league's premier two-way talents, capturing eight All-WNBA nods and seven WNBA All-Defensive team selections.
Across 471 career appearances, Ogwumike averaged 16.7 points, 7.6 boards, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 steals.
The 36-year-old is the Sparks' all-time leader in points, field-goal percentage, and steals.
Ogwumike has also served as WNBPA president since 2016 and played an important role in the league's groundbreaking collective bargaining agreement deal last March.
"As president for the last decade, Nneka understood that leadership was not simply about having a seat at the table; it was about using that seat to move the game and the business of the game forward for every player - today and for generations to come," WNBPA executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson said in a statement obtained by ESPN's Alexa Philippou.
"We are profoundly grateful for the countless ways Nneka has championed her teammates, strengthened this union, and helped shape its future."
