Quarterback Anthony Richardson doesn't know where things stand after he asked the Indianapolis Colts to trade him in February.
"I haven't really talked to my agent about that recently, I haven't really talked to anyone about that recently, so I'm not necessarily sure what's going on with that," Richardson said Sunday, according to the Indianapolis Star's Nathan Brown.
Richardson started a combined 15 games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Injuries and inconsistent play caused the 24-year-old to fall out of favor, and the Colts explored other options at quarterback. Indianapolis is moving forward with Daniel Jones as its starter, having signed him to a two-year extension in March after an Achilles injury ended his 2025 campaign.
General manager Chris Ballard stated in July that he envisions Richardson on the Colts' final roster and the franchise doesn't plan on "just giving him away," according to ESPN's Stephen Holder.
The 2023 No. 4 pick has struggled to catch snaps, whether in shotgun formation or lined up directly under center. The Florida product dismissed the idea that his vision has been a factor. He missed most of last season after suffering an orbital bone fracture prior to an October game against the Arizona Cardinals.
"I think just because of the tempo with everything sped up once you put the pads on, it's a more live-game rep, not just seven-on-seven," Richardson said, per Brown. "I think it was just an adjustment putting the pads back on and getting right."
Richardson is competing with Riley Leonard for the backup role. Head coach Shane Steichen said Richardson and Leonard will split reps in the Colts' preseason opener Thursday against the New England Patriots.
