An attempt by Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams to trademark the word "Iceman" has hit a roadblock.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office initially refused the star's application for the term, according to records obtained by ESPN's Michael Rothstein. The USPTO made the decision due to the similarity and "likelihood of confusion" in a trademark filed in 1988 by LaCrosse Footwear for insulated boots.

"These marks are identical in appearance, sound and meaning," the USPTO said in its refusal letter. "Additionally, because they are identical, these marks are likely to engender the same connotation and overall commercial impression when considered in connection with applicant's and registrant's respective goods and/or services."

The Bears quarterback can appeal the USPTO's ruling.

Williams formally applied to trademark "Iceman" on March 16 for athletic bags, water bottles, sporting goods, clothing, a website, and entertainment services.

Williams faced some pushback from Basketball Hall of Famer George Gervin, who went by the "Iceman" nickname during his prolific 14-year career.

"All I'm saying is: Young fella, we've already got one 'Iceman,'" Gervin said in March.

Gervin applied for the "Iceman" moniker, and UFC legend Chuck Liddell owns a trademark, but neither situation impacted the ruling for Williams' request.

The 2024 first overall pick also applied to trademark an "Iceman" logo, separate from the word, which remains under review by the USPTO.

The USC product is attempting to boost his stock off the field after a breakthrough season on the field last year. Williams led the Bears to an NFC North crown and a playoff win. He passed for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and completed 58% of his passes in his sophomore season. He was named the cover athlete for the Madden 27 video game in early June.
