Red Wings prospect Plante wins Hobey Baker as NCAA's top player

Minnesota-Duluth forward and Detroit Red Wings prospect Max Plante won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in men's college hockey Friday.

Plante bested Denver defenseman and San Jose Sharks draft pick Eric Pohlkamp and Michigan forward T.J. Hughes for the honor. He's the youngest of the three.

The 20-year-old sophomore tallied 25 goals and 52 points in 40 games this season, ranking third in collegiate scoring behind Quinnipiac forward and Calgary Flames prospect Ethan Wyttenbach and Hughes. Plante's 25 goals finished tied for second in the nation behind Dartmouth's Hayden Stavroff.

Minnesota-Duluth knocked off Penn State in its regional semifinal before losing to Michigan.

Plante featured for the U.S. world junior team earlier this year, notching one goal in three games.

The Red Wings drafted Plante 47th overall in 2024.

Notable NHLers to win the Hobey Baker in recent years include Macklin Celebrini (2024), Adam Fantilli (2023), Cole Caufield (2021), and Cale Makar (2019). Isaac Howard won the award last year.
