Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney will undergo surgery after suffering a high ankle sprain in Wednesday's practice, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Toney is expected to miss four-to-six weeks, sources told Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. However, Miami's star wideout could return in time for the College Football Playoff.
Earlier reports Wednesday said Toney would push to play in Saturday's pivotal matchup against No. 11 Notre Dame, but the Hurricanes will now reportedly move forward without their most versatile offensive weapon.
Toney has recorded 73 catches, 1,027 yards, and 13 touchdowns through eight games this season, establishing himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate.
He enjoyed a breakout performance in his first matchup against the Fighting Irish last year, catching six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Miami receivers Cooper Barkate and Daylyn Upshaw, along with tight end Elija Lofton, will likely see more targets from quarterback Darian Mensah with Toney sidelined.
