Alabama named sophomore Keelon Russell its starting quarterback for the 2026 season, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Russell beat out redshirt junior Austin Mack for the position after both served as Ty Simpson's backups last year. A former five-star recruit, Russell ranked as the No. 2 signal-caller on ESPN's 300 in the 2025 class behind Michigan's Bryce Underwood.
The 19-year-old separated himself from Mack in preseason scrimmages with his ability to escape the pocket and make plays on the move, according to On3's Pete Nakos. Russell reportedly took first-team reps with the offense during the Crimson Tide's 90-play scrimmage Tuesday.
Russell played in just two games last season, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 17 yards on three rushing attempts.
The Dallas, Texas, native initially committed to play for SMU before flipping to Alabama in 2024. He cited head coach Kalen DeBoer's development of Michael Penix Jr. at Washington as a major factor in his decision to change schools. Russell played his high school football in Duncanville, Texas, and was named the 2024 Gatorade Football Player of the Year.
Mack, a former four-star recruit, followed DeBoer from Washington to Alabama after redshirting for one season with the Huskies. He's attempted just 26 passes during his college career, throwing for 267 yards and three scores.
Alabama will kick off the 2026 season against East Carolina on Sept. 5.
