Boston Celtics newcomer Mitchell Robinson says a broken hand sustained during the playoff run with the New York Knicks was in reaction to a car crash involving his younger brother.

"Being 910 miles away, I felt helpless. In a moment of frustration, I banged my hand on my truck," Robinson wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. "... Before judging someone, it is essential to understand their circumstances, which may not be publicly known. Life is unpredictable, and it is how we respond to challenges that truly matters."

Robinson added: "As many of you know, I have a deep affection for my trucks, but my siblings and daughter are my top priority."

Robinson underwent surgery to repair a fractured fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand in the layoff between New York's sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals and the start of the NBA Finals. He didn't miss any time due to the injury.

The rim-protecting center was a vital contributor for the Knicks during his eighth season with the franchise. He averaged 4.8 points and 5.5 rebounds on 67.3% shooting across 18 playoff contests as the Knicks' ended their 53-year title drought.

Robinson also said he experienced "personal issues, relationship problems, and internal struggles, which affected my performance on the basketball court" during the 2025-26 campaign.

The 28-year-old unrestricted free agent reportedly agreed to a three-year, $47.4-million contract with the Celtics that can't be made official until Monday.
